First Amendment: Where It Originated and How to Protect It On September 17, 1787, the United States Constitution was signed by delegates to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, who were directed by George Washington. The 1787 convention was called to draft a new legal system for the United States now that the states were free and colonized. This new Constitution was made to increase federal authority while still protecting the rights of citizens. It established America’s National Government. In 1971, the Bill of Rights were added to Constitution containing the 10 amendments guaranteeing protection for citizens. The first commandment consisting of freedom of speech and religion. The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution reads: â€Å"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.† Prior to the Revolution, all citizens were to attend service at the Anglican Church. If the people failed to attend, they would endure civil and criminal penalties, including death. The church was supported by taxation. Feminism and popular culture have interacted over the years, each influencing and responding to the other. The media has been a cause of feminist protests, especially because of their representations of men and women’s lives. These portrayals can have an impact on society, as because of their mass distribution, they have the capability to influence the public’s perspective on gender relations and feminist issues. The views of feminism and the ideas that the movement was currently emphasizing can be seen in popular culture’s productions during that time. One critical feminist issue has been the expectations for their physical appearances and lives outside of the home. Therefore, advertisements and companies pressure women to subscribe to the beauty myth. The beauty myth has an impact upon popular culture too, as common portrayals of women nearly always present a traditional image of beauty on the screen. This can be seen in two examples of popular media, the reality television show, The Bachelor, and the science fiction film, The Stepford Wives. In both of these cases, the women’s beauty is used to undermine their power and is emphasized as a central reason for their importance to the plot. In the reality television series, The Bachelor, the beauty myth is important to the portrayal of women and the result of the competition. Albertsons is planning many new strategies to try, and grab some of the market share that Wal-Mart has taken from them. The main way they plan to do this is though innovative technology. The reason for this is do to the fact that Albertsons has vigorously tried to offer many perks to its customers, such as substantially better customer service, as well as convenience. Yet even though this may be true. Wal-Marts low prices have seemed to be far superior in generating revenue that has translated into enormous amounts of profits. So this is why now Albertsons figures that if they cannot beat them on price then they will do it through information technology. One of the ways that Albertsons has implemented information technology into their business strategy is to offer self-checkout lines. Albertsons is currently installing 4,500 NCR self-checkout terminals in its 2,300 stores. This new technology is estimated to cost in the range of $16 million to $20 million. Albertsons feels that this may give them a needed edge to compete to lower its long run costs, and speed up the checkout process. Albertsons also has also taken steps to boost it average sales. Albertsons goal is to fill every shopping cart to as full capacity as possible, as well as getting to know their customers a lot better. They have installed have installed a $50 million NCR Teradata where house in order to analyze customer data, and what type of products certain customers primarily purchase. They then plan to use their customer loyalty cards, so that they can match individual buying preferences against store inventories. Also through technology this data is available for ana lysis minutes after customers leave the store. This is a very valuable resource, because now Albertsons may be able to reach its goal of having the right products, on the right shelves, at the right time. Albertsons also has the technology to launch counter strikes when Wal-Mart tries to open stores in a nearby area. Even though a lot of these new information technologies may cost substantial amounts of money to implement, in the long wrong it may be for the best for the continued growth of Albertsons.
